Tent dress

An A-line, flared shift dress with volume.

① Measurements

Size

Drafted by the FreeSewing engine — a proper, sewable block. Wearing ease and seam allowance are already included.

② Fabric & layout

Drafting…

Suggested fabric

Soft linen · Rayon/viscose challis · Cotton lawn · Double gauze

120–220 gsm (3.5–6.5 oz/yd²)

soft and drapey so the A-line volume falls in soft folds

A tent/shift relies on the fabric to fall away from the body, so use a fluid woven like challis or soft linen that drapes into graceful folds rather than standing stiffly away; needs drape.

Avoid: Crisp poplin, Stiff bottomweight twill, Structured suiting

③ Place a motif

Preview where a chest print, pocket or embroidery will sit before you cut — then print it as a placement guide.

Atelier notes

  • 01Pick your size; the draft already includes wearing ease.
  • 02Sew a quick calico toile first — these are statement shapes, so check the fit and drape before cutting your fabric.
  • 03Watch the grainline and stay-stitch any deep curves before they stretch.
